Caribburton’s Jamaican Pop Up Restaurant
On Saturday I attended Caribburton‘s Jamaican Pop Up Restaurant which was held at Studio Gi in Hackney. The hosts were husband and wife team – Alex and Dawn Burton who provided a delicious three course meal at this intimate venue, which was literally like being in a friend’s (very large) front room, complete with a cosy corner to relax and open plan kitchen.
The evening started off with a starter of Speared Ackee and Saltfish with Dumplings and Fried Plaintain. Ackee is the national fruit of Jamaica and Ackee and Saltfish is the national dish, so a fitting starter to set the scene.
The starter of two dumplings was ample, although Dawn very kindly offered us a second helping.
Next was the main course of Jamaican Lamb Curry served with Rice & Peas, Salad & Macaroni Cheese. A substantial plate was served with succulent tender meat which was extremely tasty and the dish was very filling.
At this point a short break was in order to be able to digest the delights of the evening so far, although there was more to come in the shape of a Dessert Duo: Mango & Apple Crumble and Chocolate Cake served with Rum flavoured Cream.
At this point of the evening we were certainly feeling contented and relaxed. Not just from the ample food but due to the 64% proof Rum that was added to the desert!
Dawn and Alex were fantastic hosts, explaining the dishes which were being served and their friendly and relaxed manner made you feel very welcome. If you missed out on this event, they are hosting another event in South London and will also be at the Notting Hill Carnival later in the year so keep following to find out more… and make sure you bring a healthy appetite with you!
